", 261001," is the date which
was set by French municipal authorities for the demolition of
an industrial factory from the 19th century. The DVD leads into
an urban area that has been neglected and fell into ruin. The
Pathé Marconi plant of Châtou has produced a complete range
of items in the French music industry for over a century but
the buildings are set for destruction. ", 261001," mocks the
proposed development plans for the site and encourages collective
civic action to rehabilitate the factory.
", 261001," presents and integrates three alternative developments
for the factory: to turn it into a shopping centre, a retirement
home, or to leave it un-developed as an artist ghetto. The DVD
then utilises historical details, real historical artefacts
and social commentary to tell a personal history of the factory
and the people who worked there.
Once the user has the conviction that something must be done
about the factory's rehabilitation, they can become active within
the website that anchors the project in reality. Users can inform
others, express themselves and participate collectively in the
regeneration of the factory. A graphics tool enables users to
interact with a graphic representation of the factory, while
news reports, newsletters and petitions complete this extensive
social project. |
