"Kick Ass Kung-Fu" is an immersive
game installation that transforms computer gaming into a visual,
physical performance like modern dance or sports. In "Kick Ass
Kung-Fu", the only game instrument you need is your whole body.
The game lets one experience Kung-Fu game action, by merging
the real and the virtual with a perceptive user interface. The
game takes place on a five meter cushioned mat suitable for
martial arts and acrobatics training. It consists of software
and a physical set-up customised for the space: including a
computer, Webcam, one or two video projectors, floor and wall
materials, as well as lighting.
Using custom computer vision technology, users are taken inside
an artificial reality where the normal laws of physics no longer
apply. The movements are exaggerated so one can easily dodge
bullets by jumping five metres in the air, land behind an opponent
and begin the next attack.
"Kick Ass Kung-Fu" introduces the era of computer games as
spectator sports. It might revive the arcade after years of
yielding to home entertainment. |
